Hopefully you
navigate your way through this website and check out
my streaming videos.
The purpose of
this page is to give you some insight on this relatively
new aspect of wedding documentation and educate you on
the industry terms. Why is digital all the rage? And
what a UHF lavalier mic, boom mic, etc are. I will guide
you through the techno-babble that we, in the industry,
sometimes take for granted.
What do you require as a
deposit? Why don't you offer
VHS? How long
do you keep the original tapes? Do you
recycle tapes or will you use new
tapestock? How long
before we can watch our wedding video? Do you use
computer based editing or do you edit "in
camera"? Do you interview our
guests? Does a DVD cost extra or does it come
standard? What will the covers of the DVD and VHS
cases look like? What is a 3 CCD
or 3 chip camera? What is a tape
format and which one do you use? Why is digital
video so great? What is
non-linear editing mean? Do you have a
specific style? What is a
lavalier microphone, PZM, or Boom
mic?
What do you require
as a deposit?
To lock in your
date, the required reservation fee is $300.
Why don't you offer
VHS?
The VHS format
is meeting its end soon. By offering only DVD's I am
keeping my clients and their families up to the
current standards. VHS copies can be made at home for
those who need them. Here is a great gift opportunity to
update mom and dad or the grandparents. Buy them
a new DVD player to accompany their copy of your
wedding video!
How long do you keep the original
tapes?
I keep the
original tapes indefinitely.
Do you
recycle tapes or will you use new tapestock at our
wedding?
I ALWAYS use
new tapestock at every wedding I shoot. Tapes can be
expensive so some companies cut corners by re-using old
tapestock. I do not utilize this practice
How long will
it take before we can watch our wedding
video?
You will
have an "approval copy" of your wedding
within sixteen weeks of your wedding date.(Certain
restrictions applied)
Do you use
a computer based system or are you editing "in
camera"?
I proudly edit
with two non-linear digital editing suites. I DO NOT use
the "in camera editing style! In camera editing is
basically taking the raw footage as it is taken and
dubbing it over for the final product. This method is
usually in the lower price range, as it isn't as time
consuming to edit. The trade-off is quality of video
flow and lower editing ability. Usually no
background music is added and graphics are only at the
beginning.
What do the
credits and titles look like?
Each
Videographer has his or her own style for graphics. I
now choose to use elements from your video and
incorporate them in the look of your title pages. They
are usually animated and are also incorporated into the
DVD menus.
Do you interview our
guests?
I do provide
wedding party members an opportunity to say something to
you on the video with their spouses or significant
others. These are usually your closest friends and
it is great to see them on the video saying something to
you personally. If doing table interviews is important
to you, I suggest that you get a family friend or
relative to do the interviews of your
guests for you with a regular camcorder. I do not
supply this service.
Does a DVD copy come standard or does
that cost extra?
You get a
minimum of 3 chaptered DVD's with any package
you select.
What will the covers of my DVD look
like?

Here is
an example of a typical DVD Cover. I typically use
stills from your video to make a mini photo album on the
back of your cover. It's a great way to reflect on the
day.
What is a 3 CCD Digital
Camera?
This is a type
of camera is also called a 3 chip camera and typically
reproduces a broadcast quality image. It is different
from your consumer cameras in that it takes and combines
three separate signals and uses an onboard processor to
combine them to make the video. This can usually be a
sign of quality if your videographer uses a 3 CCD
Camera. They are also better in low light situations than
a consumer camcorder.
What is a tape format and which one do
you use?
Tape format is
what kind of video tape or cassette the
video camera uses. There are many forms including but
not limited to Hi 8 millimeter, digital 8 mm, regular 8
mm,VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS, Digital Video (DV),
Mini-Digital Video (mini DV). There are
countless other formats but the afore mentioned you are
probably most familiar with. I utilize mini
DV.
Why is digital video so
great?
You have to put
in your mind that when you record digitally, you are
just putting microscopic 1's and 0's on tape. It is much
easier to tranfers 1's and 0's to a computer, manipulate
them, then transfer them back to the tape. Have
you ever recorded a VHS tape, then made a recording of
it? Notice the significant difference in quality? This
is called generation loss. If done properly, there is no
generation loss with digital tape.
What is non-linear
editing(NLE)mean?
Simply put, it
is editing video on a computer. This involves digitally
transferring footage to a computer, adding titles,
credits, editing scene lengths, adding music, and fine
tuning a final product. This is an efficient way get a
quality video done.
Do you have a specific
style?
Yes, I do. I
choose to shoot people as they are. I find that if you
let people be themselves there is more of an
appeal that comes through. It gives a sincere feel to
the video. I also get extreme close-ups of faces,
nervous hands, pecks on the cheeks, moms and dads proud
moments, loving looks. Although I do stage some video
shots, the best video is when people don't know you are
taping them.
What is a lavalier mic, PZM mic, boom
microphone?
Lavalier mic's
are small inconspicuous mic's that pin to a suit
lapel or tie like the ones newscasters wear. They are
handy when capturing wedding vows. When they are
wireless, it is best that they are on a UHF (Ultra High
) frequencies. VHF (Very High)frequencies are acceptable
but are more susceptible to interference. Boom
Mics or shotgun mics are very directional mics, meaning
that they only pick up what sound they are pointed at.
PZM mics (Pressure zone mics) pick up areas of sound
much like a telephone speaker mic.
I hope that
this page has helped you decipher some of our
terminology. Even if you decide to go with another
videographer, it is my hope that you can ask the proper
questions. If you have any other questions, technical or
other, I would love to hear from you.
Good Luck with
your wedding planning!
Sincerely,
Darriel
